Dean L. Schatz
Dean L. Schatz of West Bend passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on June 14, 2007 at the age of 54. He went very peacefully after a six-month fight with a brain tumor.
He was born on January 4, 1953 to Lester and Dorothy Schatz (nee Schwamb) of Hubertus. He spent many summers as a boy in Sturgeon Bay working on his aunt and uncle’s farm. Dean graduated from Hartford High School, then the University of Whitewater with a BBA in computer science. He spent most of his adult life working for AT&T.
Dean belonged to the American Legion as an active member of Lt. Ray Dickop Post 36 serving as the Post Commander many times, editor of the Post newsletter, along with holding several other positions. He was active on committees such as being Membership Chairman, Publicity Chairman, the Post scholarship program, the Boys and Girls State program, as well as other committees too numerous to list. Many Post fundraisers were a part of his Legion life including State Bowling Tournaments, the annual steak fry, pancake breakfasts, Washington County Fair food stand, Harley Fest, West Bend Air Show, brat frys, and placing American flags on street lamps and Veterans graves every Memorial Day.
Dean also participated in numerous functions at the county level which included the Memorial Day parade, high school scholarship awards, presentation of flags for foreign exchange students, and was the County Commander at the time of his passing. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force.
In his personal life, Dean loved spending time with family, coached soccer for the YMCA program, went to all the sporting events his sons participated in, enjoyed going for long walks, taking long weekends to Door County, working in his yard and flower beds, planning the family reunion every other year, going to country music shows, county fairs, and watching Packer games and sports on TV. He loved kids and they loved him; he was the number one fan of his kids. Dean was very outgoing and made many friends throughout his lifetime.
Dean leaves behind his very best friend and loving wife, Carolyn, who will keep him forever in her heart; son Chris (Katie Dye) and their children Sophia and Frankie; sons Matt, and Mike; step-daughter, Tiffany (Scott Lipofski) Schultz; and son, Tony; step-daughter, Amy Schultz; and step-son, Alex (Sabrina Hattery) Schultz, daughter Lilli, and step-son Gregor Schultz. Every one of the grandkids held a special place in Dean’s heart. One brother, Dale (Judy); and special nieces, Rebecca and Caitlin will all miss him terribly and will keep him in their hearts also. Dean will also be missed by his mother-in-law, Louise Cwiklinski; sisters-in-law, Joan and Anita; and brothers-in-law, Dennis and George.
He is further survived by many other relatives and friends. Dean will be welcomed to join his parents in heaven along with several relatives and friends.
