John O. Cleveland
Funeral services will be held for John O. Cleveland of Harrison Home in Cedarburg at 7 p.m. on March 8 at St. John Lutheran Church (1193 Lakefield Road) in Grafton. John passed away peacefully on Friday, March 2, 2007 at the age of 94. Friends may greet the family at the church on Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Interment with full military honors will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday at Pilgrimís Rest Cemetery in Pewaukee. Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Home in Mequon is serving the family.
John was born on Nov. 7, 1912 in Webster City, Iowa where he was raised on a dairy farm. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1935 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
John was drafted during World War II and served in the Philippines, rising to the rank of Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army. After the war, he worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for many years. In 1955, John moved to Long Island, N.Y. to work for a civilian engineering company. In 1975, he and his wife Agnes moved to Tennessee where they hand built their retirement home. They lived there for 20 years before moving to Mequon in 1995. About five years ago, when his health no longer permitted independent living, John moved to Cedarburg. During his retirement years his hobbies were repairing antique clocks and woodworking.
John is survived by his daughter Kay (the Rev. Ellsworth) Freyer of Mequon; son Dick Cleveland of Innsbrook Estates, Mo.; and daughter Sandi (Charles) Fasano of Evergreen, Colo. He is further survived by 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his wife Agnes; and his daughter Patty Mueller.
Memorials to St. John Lutheran Church in Grafton or Christ Church in Mequon would be deeply appreciated.
