Doris Edson Selke

Doris Edson Selke, 86, of La Crosse, died March 8, 2007, at Rolling Hills Nursing Home in Sparta.

She was born July 24, 1920 in New Holstein. Doris was married to Edgar E Selke in 1942. Her employment was varied as she moved around the country with Edgar.

She was a sales correspondent for Midwest Manufacturing and Distributing Company, Sheboygan; secretary to the vice president of Hauenstein & Burmeister, Minneapolis, Minn.; administrative secretary for Marinship Corporation, Sausalito, Calif.; process control technician, laboratory statistician and night shift supervisor for the quality control department of Pillsbury Mills, Hamilton, Ohio; director of volunteers for B.R. Ryall YMCA, Glen Ellyn - Wheaton, Ill.; regional news reporter for the Janesville Gazette, Janesville; and a field supervisor for the U.S. Department of Commerce, Census Bureau. Her community and volunteer service includes: speaker on mental health issues for the Federated Womenís Clubs, Bloomer; program chairman for the Newcomers Club, Rockford, Ill.; Brownie leader and Girl Scout committee member, Hamilton; teacherís aide and librarian aide for Whittier Grade School, Wheaton; precinct committeewoman, Jefferson County; historian for Society of Professional Journalists, UW Chapter, Whitewater; member board of directors, League of Women Voters, Whitewater; tutor for adult illiterates for the Literacy Plus Program, Sault Ste Marie, Mich.; and she was active with the National Federation of the Blind.

She gave a presentation to the Mayo Clinic concerning issues of the blind in 1991. Her education was a continuing process and included three years at UW-Madison, one semester at Miami University, Hamilton, Ohio, and three years at UW-Whitewater. She attained her bachelor of science degree in 1980 at UW-Whitewater.

She was a member of The Society of Professional Journalists-Sigma Delta Chi. In her spare time, she managed to raise four sons and two daughters, all living: Robert K. (Tedi) Selke of Sault Ste Marie; Kristin A. (Jon) Lucas of Hartford; Jo Francis (Don) Hannon of Basalt, Col.; Michael P. (Patricia) Selke of Tomah; Richard W. (Judy) Selke of Denver; George H. (Cheri) Selke of Rochester, Minn. A direct quote of both of her sons-in-law: "She was the best mother I knew."

Grandchildren: Lisa, Kate, Karl, David, Andrea, Teresa, Kerrie, Colleen, Michael, Edgar, Georgia, Cody, Matthew, Tony, Christopher and Lisa. Great Grandchildren: Amber, Emma, Maddy, Kayden, Daniel, Joelle, Carrie, Paolo, Jessa, Maleiya, Niav, Heather, Bonnie, Brady, Savannah, Cody Jr., and Tyler also survive. Doris is also survived by her brother, Tom Edson of Costa Mesa, Calif.

She is loved and will be missed by all who knew her.
