Ruth E. Hess

Ruth E. Hess, nee Dermody, 91, of West Bend passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007 at the Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born Sept. 5, 1916 in Ishpeming, Mich. to the late John and Bessie (nee Bargren) Der-mody.

Ruth attended grade school in Michigan and finished high school in Sheboygan. She went on to receive her registered nurse degree from the Milwaukee Hospital School of Nursing in 1937.

On June 12, 1937 she married George L. Hess at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend, of which she was a member all of her life.

After her marriage, Ruth worked as a registered nurse for a short time at St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend and much later, as a volunteer "pink lady" for the St. Joseph’s Hospital Guild.

In her earlier years she had enjoyed playing golf, bridge and had been a member of the West Bend Woman’s Club and a theater group, performing in some of its plays.

Ruth also enjoyed music. She could play the piano and violin and sang in the Sweet Adeline’s musical group.

Ruth was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was an avid reader and loved to cook and entertain.

Ruth and her husband, George enjoyed many years at their summer lake home in Boulder Junction, with family and friends.

Survivors include her six children, Lorrie Panawash of Beaver Dam, Richard (Judy) of Eagle River, Mary (James) Gillingham of Wynn, Mich., George Jr. (Jane) of Kohler, Ruth Ann (Bob) Cole of Ocean Park, Wash. and Robert (Joan) of West Bend; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She is further survived by her sister, Betty Witherspoon of Sun City, Calif.; two nieces; a nephew; and other relatives and friends.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, George, and a great-granddaughter, Hannah Murray.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Oct. 26, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church in West Bend, with Rev. Gerald Brittain presiding. Meet at church for Mass.

Burial will follow in Holy Angels Cemetery.

Masses or memorials to the charity of the donor’s choice are appreciated.
