Mae M. Klein
Mae M. Klein, nee Schmeichel, 96, of Stevens Point, formerly of West Bend, passed away Thursday, Oct. 26, 2007 at Our House Nursing Home in Wisconsin Rapids.
She was born on July 14, 1911 in Cedarburg to the late Henry and Helen (nee Klumb) Schmeichel.
Mae graduated from Cedar-burg High School and from college, with a degree in teaching.
During her school years Mae worked at a popcorn stand in Cedarburg. Her future husband, Robert J. Klein, met her while buying some popcorn.
He bought a lot of popcorn, and on Sept. 15, 1932 they were united in marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cedarburg.
The couple made their home in Rockfield where they owned and operated Kleinís Store.
During that time Mae also taught at the elementary school in Germantown.
They moved to West Bend in 1975, and Robert preceded her in death in 1996.
In 1999 Mae moved to the nursing home in Stevens Point where her son could take better care of her.
Mae was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in West Bend, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star, West Bend Chapter 73.
Mae was also active with the Meals on Wheels program while she lived in West Bend.
She is survived by two children, Carol (Warren) Beltz of Gum Springs, Va. and Robert H. (Sharron) Klein of Stevens Point; five grandchildren, Heidi (David) Doudna, Nels (Nancy) Swenson, Kristen (Jeff) Johnson, Gretchen (Justin) Mirkes and Robert J. Klein II; eight great-grandchildren, Rosalie, Kimberly, Benja-min, Melody, Bethany and Daniel Doudna, Erik and Anna Swenson; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Klumb and Louise Morrison, both of California; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a brother and his wife, Rev. Roy and Ade Schmeichel.
A graveside memorial service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 11 a.m. at Washington County Mem-orial Park, West Bend, with Rev. Rich Vincent of Immanuel United Church of Christ officiting.
Myrhum-Patten Funeral and Cremation Service, West Bend, assisted the family.
