Alice E. Schmitt
Alice E. Schmitt, nee Gehl, 88, of Hartford passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 24, 2008 at Cedar Lake Community in West Bend.
She was born on Aug. 23, 1919 in St. Lawrence to Joseph and Eleanor (nee Baertlein) Gehl, and married Franklin Schmitt on Feb. 19, 1941 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church.
Alice worked along side her husband on their farm for many years.
After his passing in 1974, she worked for many years at St. Kilian in the school lunch program. She loved meeting and being with the children of the school and they loved her.
Alice was a member of St. Kilian Catholic Church, the Daughters of Isabella and the Catholic Knights.
She loved baking and was known for her pies.
Alice also volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul store for many years.
Alice is survived by her children, LuAnn Hammond of West Bend, Don (Laura) Schmitt of Wauwatosa and Chris (David) Schumann of Janesville; four grandchildren, Scott (Kelli) Hammond, Steve (Heather) Hammond, Katie and Austin Schumann; five great-grandchildren, Carolyn, Elizabeth, Natalie, Madeleine and Grace; her sisters and brothers, Marcella Roethle of Rubicon, Dolores Guerndt of West Bend, Helen (Harold) Beine of Hartford and Joseph (friend Clare) Gehl of Hartford; and her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Clarence Schmitt of Rubicon, Jerome (Helen Marie) Schmitt of Rubicon, Peter (Margaret Mary) Schmitt of Rubicon, Marie Kraemer of Wautoma, Dolores Lindemann of Rubicon and Josephine (Norman) Baus of Rubicon.
Alice is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Franklin; her brother Alfred Gehl; and other relatives.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Alice will be held on Tuesday, April 29, at 6 p.m. at St. Kilian Catholic Church in Hartford with Father David LaPlante officiating.
Visitation at the church will be on Tuesday from 3 to 6 p.m.
Interment will be in St. Kilian Cemetery, Hartford.
