Dick Klas

Dick Klas, age 70, and his wife Ida Klas, age 74, of Fennimore, passed away on Tuesday morning, Aug. 19, 2008 as a result of an automobile accident in rural Dodgeville. Funeral services for Dick and Ida were held on Aug. 24 at St. Peter Lutheran Church. Pastor Charles Miller and Father George Horath officiated the service. Visitation was held on Aug. 23 at the Larson Family Funeral Home in Fennimore. A second visitation was held at the church on Aug. 24, prior to the funeral service. Burial took place at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Fennimore.

Dick was born on July 19, 1938 in Port Washington, the son of Alex and Suzanne (nee Jacque) Klas. Ida was born on Dec. 4, 1933 in Fillmore, the daughter of Albert and Emelia (nee Roloff) Wollmann. Dick and Ida (nee Wollmann) were married on Oct. 10, 1968 in Joliet, Ill.

Dick and Ida owned and operated the Livestock Exchange in Fennimore. They loved farming. Working with livestock their entire lives led Dick to become a self-taught auctioneer. They lived their lives with determination, persistence, perseverance, honesty, integrity, generosity and loyalty. Dick had a sense of community pride and had a great desire to support all youth.

Dick and Ida loved people, especially children. Dick always had candy for the kids at the sale barn and would have big giveaways with such things like melons. Ida was a past 4-H leader for the Plum Valley Boosters and was a member of the Lancaster Farm Bureau for the past 25 years. She loved to play Bingo with her friends in various communities throughout the area.

Dick and Ida had a great passion for the Fennimore Fair continuation and loved bragging to friends far away about "our little community fair." They also enjoyed supporting the county fair, and not for business reasons.

Dick and Ida loved spending time with their grandchildren and thoroughly enjoyed the people throughout the area. Dick and Ida will be greatly missed by all of their family and friends; they have truly touched the lives of many.

Dick and Ida are survived by their seven children, Kurt (Carrie) Wester of Grafton, Debby (Dennis) Wester-Grube of Fredonia, Floyd Klas of Grafton, Katherine Bayer of Rhinelander, Jill (Scott) Wester of West Bend, Rick (Denise) Klas of Belgium and Jake (LuAnna) Klas of Fennimore.

They are further survived by 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dick is also survived by three brothers and one sister, Kenny Klas of Port Washington, Jimmy (Barb) Klas of Fond du Lac, Kathy (Jim) Wollner of Belgium and Jerry Klas of Adell.

Ida is also survived by two sisters, Edna Schwartz of West Bend and Ruth Risse of Silver Creek; and a sister-in-law, Carol Wollmann of Burbank, Calif.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; and a son Brian Klas. Ida was preceded in death by her parents; and seven siblings, Val Hartz, Ella Schmit, Hildegarde Panarusky, Erich Wollmann, Alma Donath, Esther Mueller and Ewald Wollman.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in loving memory.
