Hedwig ‘Hattie’ Julia Gurtner

Hedwig "Hattie" Gurtner (nee Hug) of Hartford passed away on Thursday, Dec. 25, 2008 at the Mayville Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center. She was 92 years old.

Hattie was born on May 2, 1916 in the town of Addison to John Sr. and Magdeline (nee Hefter) Hug. She married Fred Gurtner on April 15, 1939 at Ss. Peters & Paul Catholic Church in Nenno.

Hattie was an active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and the Pricilla Circle. She and Fred owned and operated the Gurtner Cheese Factory for many years. Hattie loved traveling, collecting spoons, cooking and rose gardening. She babysat for many children over her lifetime, up to the age of 91.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Ronald Menger of Wayne; six grandchildren, Connie (Regan) O’Neill of the town of Wayne, Thomas (Liliana) Menger of Menasha, James (Brigette) Menger-Anderson of Minneapolis, Heidi (Quin) Neldner of West Bend, Rodney Vesper of Johnson Creek and John Vesper of Johnson Creek; four great-grandchildren, Julia, Ian, Natalia and Jacob; two brothers, Ronald (Gladys) Hug of Neosho and Lawrence (Joyce) Hug of Kohlsville; five sisters, Melania Becker of Hartford, Bonnie Theusch of Kewaskum, Lucille Zimmel of Pickerel, Darlene Beistel of Slinger and Grace Lammers of Wittenberg; and a sister-in-law, Rosemary Hug of West Bend. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Hattie was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, in 1970; a daughter, Margaret "Margie"; eight brothers, Leonard, Eugene, Werner, Robert, Dennis, James, John Jr. and Francis; and three sisters, Betty Hoerig, Loretta Strupp and Anna Mueller.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008 at 10 a.m. at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Hartford with the Rev. Tom Launius officiating. The family will greet relatives and friends on Monday, Dec. 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. There will also be a visitation at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10 a.m.

Interment Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Hartford.
