Edward J. Hammer, 84

Edward J. Hammer, 84, of West Bend, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at Kathy Hospice. He lived a long and honorable life.

Mr. Hammer was born on April 8, 1924, in Hillsboro, to the late Edward J. and Stella C. (Natwick) Hammer.

He graduated from Hillsboro High School, class of 1942, some of whom he kept in touch with until his death.

His education at the University Wisconsin-Madison was interrupted for three years to serve in the United States Marine Corp. in World War II, during which time he participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima.

On Nov. 8, 1945 he was united in marriage to Mary Jean Krause in Hillsboro. Edward and Mary had four sons before she passed away on Oct. 19, 1985.

On Feb. 14, 1987, he married Hildegarde L. Kopplinger. Hildegarde passed away on May 5, 2004.

After being discharged from the military, Edward took advantage of the GI Bill to return to UW-Madison where he received a bachelorís degree in business administration in 1948 and a law degree in 1952. After law school, he was employed by the Kohler Co. as a corporate attorney in 1952. During his career at Kohler Co., he served as assistant secretary, corporate secretary, vice president of industrial relations, and vice president of employee benefits. He also was a member on the Board of Directors, Executive Committee and Management Committee, serving as its chairman for a period of time.

Edward was also a director of Sheboygan Memorial Hospital, Kohler Building and Loan Association, the United Fund of Sheboygan and Associated Industries and Manufacturers where he also served as treasurer.

He was a member of Kohler Co. Quarter Century Club, Friendship House in Sheboygan, Kohler Foundation, American Bar of Wisconsin, Sheboygan County Bar Association and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lodge 8262.

Edward is survived by his sons, Dr. Todd J. (Darlene) of West Bend, John C. (Deborah) of Germantown, and Dr. David C. of West Bend. He is further survived by seven grandchildren, Scott (Lisa), Jeffrey, Tyler, Nicole, Jamison, Caitlin and Kirsten; great grandson, Carson; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends who carry on his legacy of being productive members of society.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son; and one sister.

A funeral service for Edward will be at 3 p.m. Friday at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel of West Bend with the Rev. Pamela Marolla officiating.

Burial will follow at Mount Vernon Cemetery of Hillsboro.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday, from 1 p.m. until time of service at 3 p.m.

A memorial fund has been established in Edwardís name for Our Saviorís Lutheran Church or Cedar Community.
