Janet I. Pike

Janet I. Pike, 90, of Hartford, passed away at her residence surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2008.

She was born Oct. 2, 1917 in Stoughton, the daughter of Jorgen and Thea (nee Ostad) Handeland, and married Kenneth R. Pike on Dec. 25, 1942 in Glen Rock, N.J.

She graduated in 1936 from Stoughton High School and in 1940 from the University of Wisconsin.

Janet taught at Westfield High School and later was a UW- Extension agent in Dodge and Washington counties.

She served on the Washington County Community Health Committee for over 40 years; the Washington County Threshold, Day Care and Child Guidance Boards; Health Planning Agency of SE Wisconsin (SEWRPC); Hartford St. Joseph’s Hospital; University of Wisconsin-Wash-ington County Foundation; was a life member of University of Wisconsin Alumni; was a member of First United Methodist Church; O.E.S. Chapter 220 and secretary of the Pike Family Association of America.

Ken and Janet were major contributors to the Schauer Arts and Activities Center and the development of the Pikes Peak Room.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth; and daughter-in-law, Alexa Pike; her sisters, Daphne Schneider of McFarland, and Ellen Jacques of Blooming-ton, Ind.; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Handeland of Stoughton.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Col. Gary Leon Pike and Robert Russell Pike; her daughter, Nancy Thea Pike; her brother, Carlyle Handeland; her sister and brother-in-law, Lillian (John) Gilroy; and a brother-in-law, Robert Jacques.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Hartford, followed by funeral services at 4 p.m.

The Rev. Brian Kundinger will officiate, and private intement will take place.

The Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home, Hartford, is serving the family.
