John J. Hames
John J. Hames, 87, of West Bend died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008 at his residence.
He was born Oct. 16, 1920 in Waubeka, son of the late Joseph and Irene (Kramer) Hames, and on March 14, 1942 he married Alice Monday in Milwaukee.
She preceded him in death in 2007.
John proudly served his country with distinction in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II.
He lived in Waubeka for 60 years where he and Alice operated Hames Nursery Landscape Con-tractors Inc. before moving to Green Lake, town of Farmington.
He earned many state and federal landscape contracts on the interstate highway system.
His many achievements in the community included founding the National Flag Day Foundation of which he held the office of president for 48 years., chief of the Waubeka Fire Department for 20 years, president of the former Grandview School Board, president of the Badger Firemenís Association for two years, past commander and life member of Waubeka VFW Flag Day Post 7037 and chairmen of the State of Wisconsin VFW Flag Day Com-mittee from 1946-1972.
He is survived by two sons, Dennis of Waubeka and Steven of Monona; his daughter, Sara (Ronald) Nagy of Pewaukee; six grandchildren, Christine (David) Vogt, Andrea (Bruce) Gierach, Michael (Becky) Hames, T.J. Baranek, Kelsey Lurvey and Tam-my Hames; seven great- grandchildren; his sisters, Virginia (the late Carl) Tacke of Brookfield and Teresa Hames of Charlottesville, S.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a sister, Marie; and a brother, Joey.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 17, at 6 p.m. at the Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington with Rev. Don Niederfrank officiating.
Burial will be in Waubeka Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.
