Emil Formella of Neenah died on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008 with his family by his side, at Franciscan Care Center in Appleton, at the age of 83. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated for Emil at noon on Jan. 21 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 324 Nicolet Blvd., in Menasha. Father Paul Radetski will celebrate the Mass and military rites will be performed following the service. Friends may call at the church on Monday, from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Interment will take place at St. Margaret Cemetery in Neenah. Kessler Funeral Home of Neenah is serving the family.
Emil was born on Jan. 10, 1925 in Rosholt, the son of Emil and Anna (nee Malek) Formella Jr. On June 28, 1947, Emil married Ethel M. Esson in Ashland and they recently celebrated 60 years of marriage together. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Menasha.
Emil was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, having served with the 4th Marine Division in Iwo Jima, Saipan and the Marshall Islands. He was also a life member of the Jackson VFW Post 7240 - post commander from 1991-94, the Winnebago Detachment 357, Marine Corp League and the Jackson American Legion Post 0486.
Emil was a proud AA sponsor for 37 years and was an inspiration to many. He also volunteered to help the homeless at King Veteranís Home.
Emil loved dancing with his wife, Ethel. The couple taught country line dancing at the Menasha Senior Center for 16 years. Emil also enjoyed rummage sales, recycling and animals, especially horses.
Emil is survived by his wife Ethel; his children Kathie Fauk of Neenah, Claudia (Ray) Janicki of North Prairie, Lorrie (John Jackson) Formella of Sherwood, Tom (Sharon Konitzer) Formella of Neenah, Bill (Sandy) Formella of Buford, Ga.; his grandchildren Dean (Nikole) Janicki, Michele (Pete) Baumann, Steve (Jackie) Fauk, Sara (Jeremy) McGlothlin, Melissa Janicki, Jeff Fauk, B.J. Formella, Lee Formella, Danny Formella, Carla Janicki, Erin Formella, Michael Janicki, Daisy Formella, Amy Formella, Jacob Formella, Loretta (Demarcus) Richardson, Trevor Jackson and Philip Jackson; his great-grandchildren Naithan Janicki, Braden Mc-Glothlin, Nickolas Janicki, Tyler Janicki, Malcolm Jackson and Brandon Richardson; his brothers Herman (Gerrie) Formella of Jackson, Rodale (Trudy) Formella of Mukwonago; his sisters Virginia Stanislowski of Milwaukee and Fern Lewandowski of Milwaukee; his sister-in-law Betty Esson of Proctor, Minn.; and his brother-in-law George Esson of Rochester, Minn. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews.
Emil was preceded in death by twin grandsons, Bryan and Bradley; two brothers and two sisters; a brother-in-law and a sister-in-law.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
