Muriel N. Bast

Muriel N. Bast of Hartford passed away Sunday, June 29, 2008 at the Aurora Medical Center in Hartford at the age of 64 years.

Muriel was born on November 23, 1943 in Hartford to Arthur and Hazel (nee Sterman) Bast.

She worked for the Broan Mfg. Company for 45 years. Muriel was a Sunday school teacher for 20 years at the Congregational Church and also a 4-H leader for over 20 years where she encouraged many young adults to participate in the 4-H dog program.

She loved her collie dogs and had a great time showing them. She had shown more than 20 champion dogs in the United States as well as Canada.

Muriel was asked to judge at the shows where many wonderful friendships were made. She was a trainer at Cedar Creek Pet Resort and enjoyed helping people show their dogs and many of them went on to become winners.

This past year Muriel was recognized at the National Collie Show for encouraging young people in the Junior Showmanship category at the AKC shows. She also was in charge of planning the 4-H State dog show which will be held this year at the Washington County Fair Park in West Bend.

They expect around 400 young people to participate and exhibit there.

Muriel loved helping her parents and family show their percheron horses at the Wisconsin, Minnesota, Indiana and Michigan state fairs, and the National Percheron Show in Ohio as well as the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, Canada. Her favorite mares were Monette and Crystal. Muriel would also drive the horses for carriage rides for weddings, parades, festivals and for a while they would offer rides in Mayville, where again she always had a wonderful time and made many friends.

Muriel is survived by her sister, Jeanne Bast of Hartford; her brother Jon (Kathy) Bast of Lakeside, Calif.; and her nephews, Ryan and Connor Bast. She is further survived by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her uncle Lester Sterman.
