Lorena B. (nee Hug) Senn

Lorena B. (nee Hug) Senn of Cedarburg died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at Luther Manor in Milwaukee, at the age of 98. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 28, at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, Ill. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, June 27, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the funeral home on Saturday, June 28, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., prior to the funeral service. The Rev. Christopher W. Hill, senior pastor of Evangelical United Church of Christ in Highland, will officiate the funeral service. Interment will take place at the Highland City Cemetery.

Lorena B. Hug was born on May 4, 1910, in St. Rose Township, Clinton County, in Highland, Ill., daughter of Julius and Bertha (nee Lang) Hug. On Oct. 10, 1928, she married Roland W. Senn, who passed away Sept. 24, 1967.

When Lorena was 6 years old, the family moved into Highland, where Lorena spent her entire life. She graduated from Highland High School in June of 1927. After high school, Lorena became a secretary at the Hug Company, a truck assembling firm of Highland. She spent several years at home raising her son and then worked for the Highland schools when he entered kindergarten. She served as educational secretary for the Highland Community Unit School District of Highland, Pierron, Grantfork, Alhambra and New Douglas, retiring in 1973. For all of her life, the school has continued to hold a prominent place in her life and heart. In 1962, she was certified as an "Educational Secretary" by the National Association of Educational Secretaries.

Lorena’s church held a high place in her life. She was baptized, confirmed and married in the Evangelical United Church of Christ. In her younger years, she was a church school teacher for almost 20 years. Later, she served on the church consistory and as president of the church. She was privileged to serve in wider aspects of the church as moderator of the Illinois South Conference of the United Church of Christ and twice as a delegate to the U.C.C. Synod meetings.

Lorena was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ; Royal Neighbors of America, Imperial Camp 1957 (former Oracle and held many other offices); Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 524; Highland Historical Society; St. Joseph Hospital S.H.I.P. (Senior Health Insurance Program); Faith Countryside Homes Aux. (Friends of Faith); Hitz Memorial Nursing Home Aux.; Weinheimer Senior Citizens (Chaplain many years); Women’s Guild of the Church.

She was a life member of the Illinois Association of Educational Office Personnel, serving a term as president. She was also a retired life member of the National Association of Educational Office Personnel, participating in several summer seminars.

Lorena is survived by her son, Lamar R. (Nancy) Senn of Cedarburg; grandchildren, Scott E. (Ruth) Senn of Fort Wayne, Ind., Sheryl E. (Alan) Kim of Madison, Spencer E. Senn of Wauwatosa, Susanne E, Senn of Whitefish Bay and Stacey E. Senn of Whitefish Bay; great-grandchildren, Eric Senn, Summer Senn, Kamei Kim, Abby Kim, Daniel Kim, Brittnay Senn, Kayla Senn and Cassidy Senn.

Lorena was preceeded in death by her mother, Bertha Hug (nee Lang); father, Julius J.S. Hug; husband, Roland W. Senn (1967); brother, Delmar O. Hug (2005), brothers, Lester J. Hug (1990), Wayne R. Hug (1990); sisters, Cleda Saathoff (1992), Viola Hug (as an infant in 1909), Juletta Hug (in 1946 at age 23); sisters-in-law, Rosalie Hug (2006), Gladys Hug (2007), Esther Hug (1972), Olive "Ollie" Hug (1991); and brother-in-law, Homer Saathoff (1997).
