Herbert J. Melbinger

Herbert J. Melbinger, 92, of West Bend died Thursday, March 20, 2008 at the Hope Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lomira. He was born Feb. 3, 1916 in Washington County to the late Andrew and Margaret (nee Solms) Melbinger.

Herb worked on the family farm most of his life, but also worked at the elevator in Newburg before working at the West Bend Elevator. He also was employed at Russ Darrow Automotive prior to his retirement.

He was a tremendous supporter of high school basketball, both boy’s and girl’s and received an award for his attendance and support of the teams. Herb also realized the importance of education and helped many kids and students further their educations and currently has a COLUMNS Scholarship in his name. He also enjoyed attending the many ethnic festivals in Milwaukee and never missed a West Bend Germanfest.

Survivors include his two nephews: Ralph (Elaine) Gerner of Cedarburg and Richard (Bonnie) Gerner of West Bend and he was the great-uncle to Ross (Traci) Gerner of Johnsburg, Ill., Kari (Jim) Thornborough of Chicago, Kurt Gerner of Shorewood and Chelli (J.P.) Whelan of Conover, NC. He is the great-great-uncle of Haille, Alexis and Ashton Gerner, Blue and Ivy Thornborough, Lucy Aragon-Gerner and Lindsey and Maggie Whelan. He is further survived by other relatives and friends.

Herb is preceded in death by his sister Evelyn and her husband Arnold Gerner.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 24 at 7 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend with Rev. Kevin Kowalski officiating. Burial will be Tuesday in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Newburg. Visitation will be Monday, at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 6:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Newburg or the Hope Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lomira are appreciated.
