Joseph B. Martin

Joseph B. Martin, 88, of West Bend, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Surrounded by his sons, wife and granddaughter, Joseph died peacefully and is now in heaven with his family members who preceded him in death, his parents, Thomas and Catherine (nee Grant) Martin, his brothers, James and Thomas and his sister, Helen.

Survivors include Peg-gy, his loving wife of 66 years; two sons, Joseph Jr. of Lomira and Tom (Rose Ann) of West Bend; five grandchildren, Jennifer Martin (John Kohnert), Scott (Kristen), Jessica Schneider (Karl), Patrick and Shawn Cressey; and seven great-grandchildren, Bethany, Dalton, Miranda, Ben, Lyndsey, Connor and Arrah.

He is further survived by his sister, Marie (George) Peterson of Plymouth; a sister-in-law, Doris Derse of Ventura, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Born on Sept. 2, 1919 in a small village in Scotland, Joe came to America with his family when he was only 4, and went to school in Whitefish Bay.

He married his high school sweetheart, Mary M. "Peggy" Derse on May 24, 1941 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Milwaukee.

During World War II, Joe built military boats and related desalinization equipment at Froemming Ship Builders and was always very proud of these accomplishments and other work he did in the product development area.

After the war, craving more independence and flexibility in his schedule, he began his own heating company and eventually expanded into the home building and general contracting arena, where he worked until he retired in 2000.

Joe loved to travel by car or train and made numerous family trips throughout the Midwest and out West.

He was passionate about horses, horse jumping and horse racing and his favorite jumper, Bellameade Master, was an Olympic candidate.

Joe enjoyed ballroom dancing on the weekends, playing the trombone, cricket and baseball, and was known for his quick wit, intelligence, compassion for animals and dedication to his family and friends.

A Christian Burial Mass will be held Saturday, March 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church, 406 Jefferson St. West Bend, with Rev. Michael Moran presiding.

Burial will follow in the new St. Mary’s Cemetery.

A visitation will take place at the the church before the Mass from 10 until 10:45 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in Joseph’s name to St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception Church, where he was a longtime parish member.

The Schmidt Funeral Home of West Bend is serving the family.
