Lucille H. Merkes

Lucille H. Merkes, nee Lackas, 83, of Iron Ridge passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008 at the Mayville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on Aug. 11, 1924 on the family farm in the town of Rubicon to Henry and Caroline (nee Kaiser) Lackas.

Lucille was united in marriage to Francis Merkes on Sept. 1, 1945 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stratford.

Lucille enjoyed gardening and loved making quilts.

Her family was very important to her and she dearly loved her husband, kids and grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Lucille is survived by her husband of 62 years, Francis; her 10 children, Mary Frances of West Bend, Alan (Mary) Merkes of Slinger, Francis Jr. (Phyllis) Merkes of Rubicon, Paul (Sue) Merkes of Orlando, Fla., Carl (Janet) Merkes of Burnett, Susan Merkes of Waukesha, Mark (Deb) Merkes of Waupun, Leo (Chris) Merkes of Horicon, Earl (Kenn) Merkes of Orlando and Michael (Kathy) Merkes of Horicon; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Ann Sterr of Hartford, and Caroline (Arthur) Young of Huilsburg; and her sister-in-law, Marion Lackas of Hartford.

She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandson, Alan Jr.; her great-grandson, James; a sister, Catherine and her husband Jerome Weber; her brother, Henry Lackas; and her brother-in-law, John Sterr.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Lucille will be held on Tuesday, May 20, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Woodland, with Fr. Alois Van Beek officiating.

Visitation will be Monday, May 19, at the Shimon Funeral Home, Hartford, from 3 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and on Tuesday at the church from 10 to 11 a.m.
