Harriet C. McDermott, 83

Harriet C. McDermott (Whipple) of Menomonee Falls, formerly of Hartford, passed away surrounded by her loving family, Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008, at her residence. She was 83.

Harriet was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Michigan to Harold and Leah (Durham) Whipple. She was united in marriage to John J. McDermott on Dec. 21, 1943, in Michigan. John preceded her in death in 2007.

Harriet graduated from Saugatuck High School, Saugatuck, Mich., first in her class. She worked as a machine embroidery operator. Harriet resided in Oak Creek from 1962 to 1989 and retired to Hot Springs, Ark. in 1990, then returned to Wisconsin in 2003. Harriet enjoyed knitting, crocheting and reading. She was very active in the Episcopal Church Women’s Group at St.
Timothy Episcopal Church in Wauwatosa, and the Clergy Wives group. Harriet was a member of St. Aidan Episcopal Church in Hartford.

Harriet is survived by her children, Robert (Hanna) McDermott of Hartford, Jean (Dennis) Havey of Oak Creek, Tom (Beverly) McDermott of Oshkosh, Catherine (David) Vandermeuse of Hartford, Patrick McDermott of Hartford, and Gayle (Tom) Petrilli of Richfield; 18 grandchildren; six great- grandchildren; her sister, Alice Lundgren of Michigan; and one brother-in-law, Ray Smith of Michigan. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John McDermott; two sisters, Dee Smith and Ruth (Irving) Pershing; and one brother, Harold “Bud” Whipple.

Memorial services for Harriet will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at the Shimon Funeral Home, 824 Union St., Hartford, with Fr. Mike Tess and Fr. Gary Lambert officiating.

Visitation is on Monday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Aidan Episcopal Church Columbarium are greatly appreciated.
