Gilbert C. Hegy, 95

Gilbert Chamberlin Hegy, age 95, former Hartford resident, died November 13, 2008, in McHenry, Ill.

He was born May 8, 1913, in Milwaukee, to Frank and Ethel (Chamberlin) Hegy. The family settled on a farm north of Hartford in 1915. He married Josephine Mary Brown (Jose-phine Hulita) on March 30, 1937.

Gilbert, affectionately known as ńGilī, attended St. Kilian's school before graduating from Hartford High in 1931. An aviation enthusiast from early childhood, he graduated from Parks Air College in St. Louis in 1935 and was soon hired as one of the ńpioneerī aircraft mechanics by American Airlines. His 40 year career with American, first as a mechanic and later as a Manager in Chicago and Buffalo, closed with his retirement in 1975.

In honor of Mr. Hegy's contribution to our nation's aviation heritage, his name is permanently inscribed on a ńWall of Honorī at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles Airport, Virginia.

Gil was an avid sports fan and played on a local traveling baseball team (The Country Gentlemen) after graduating from high school. Living in the Chicago area for much of his life, he was a great supporter of his Bears, Cubs, and White Sox. He was also fond of bowling and golf. Music was important to him and he never tired of the ńbig bandī sound, especially Guy Lombardo.

Gil is survived by a son, David (Phyllis) of Crystal Lake, Ill.; daughter, Sheila of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, Michael (Angela), Deborah (Rob), Christopher (Sausan), David (Sally), Todd, and Anne. He also is survived by great-grandchildren, Jacob, Brandon, Michael, Ismail, Zachary, Elissa, Natalie and Sophia; along with other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Josephine, and son-in-law, William Laird Kleine-Ahlbrandt.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Gilbert will be on Friday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m. at St. Kilian Catholic Church, Hartford, with Fr. David LaPlante officiating. Interment will be in St. Kilian Cemetery, Hartford.
