Laurence "Rip" Schneider, 90

Laurence "Rip" Schneider, 90, longtime resident of Jackson, went to his eternal home on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend.

He was born on July 18, 1918, to Ignatius and Erna Schneider in the town of Richfield, and graduated from West Bend High School in 1936. On Sept. 7, 1940, he married Dorothy Louise Frank of Jackson.

Rip served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific and became a charter member of the S/Sgt. Henry F. Gumm Post 486 American Legion where he was a member for 63 years. He also belonged to the Jackson Memorial Post 7240 V.F.W.

From 1946 until 1976, Rip and Dorothy managed the Jackson Hotel and Tavern. After that, and until retirement in 1984, they owned and operated the Jackson Motel, which they built. They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary before Dorothy’s death in 2003.

He took a lot of pride in Jackson and readily volunteered his help for community betterment projects. For 13 years, he served as a Cub Scouts committeeman. He won the Jackson Area Business Association Man of the Year Award twice, in 1978 and 1993.

In retirement, Rip turned his talents to building quality doll houses, many of which he donated for fundraising projects for Action in Jackson and for his church. For his entire life he was a devoted member of St. Boni-face in Germantown where he rarely missed a Sunday. For the past four years he lived at Cedar Bay West.

Rip loved big gatherings at his house on the holidays. He rooted fervently for the Brewers through thick and thin, and he enjoyed the many friends he made during his long business career.
