Charles L. Shortt, 78

Charles L. Shortt of Hartford passed away Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at Angels Grace Hospice in Oconomowoc after a short illness. He was 78.
Charles was born June 9, 1930, in Pound, Va, to Grover and Edith (Tompkins) Shortt.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Connell on Sept. 12, 1955, in Tennessee. Charles worked for the city of Hartford, retiring in 1994. He also served as an alderman in Hartford for nine years.

Charles proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and was a member of American Legion Post 19 in Hartford. He was a lifetime member of the Neosho-Horicon-Mayville Masonic Lodge 108, the Scottish Rite and the Tripoli Shrine Temple.

Charles was also a member of St. Aidanís Episcopal Church in Hartford.
He loved old Western movies and visiting his childhood home in the mountains of Virginia.

Charles dearly loved his family and friends and was always willing to lend an ear or a helping hand to anyone. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; his son, Steven Shortt of Hartford; his daughter, Lisa (Dwain) Schmidt of Jackson; seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth of Florida and Ernest of King.

Charles is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael; and one daughter, Lynn Kauper.

Funeral services for Charles will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, at St. Aidanís Episcopal Church, 670 E. Monroe St., Hartford, with Fr. Gary Lambert officiating.

Family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Interment at Union Cemetery, Colgate, following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the St. Aidanís Episcopal Church Building fund are appreciated.
