Laura A. Mathews

Laura A. Mathews (Bratz), 95, died peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, at Cedar Lake Health Center, in the town of West Bend.

She was born Sept. 19, 1913, on the family homestead in Fillmore to the late Hugo and Martha Bratz.

She married Glen Mathews on Aug. 28, 1954, in Milwaukee and then moved to White Plains, N.Y.

She and Glen retired in 1979 and moved to West Bend. Glen preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1997.

Laura graduated from Random Lake High School and at-tended Oshkosh Business College.

She served in the Navy as a WAVE in California for almost one year in 1945 and worked as a bookkeeper most of her adult life.

Laura enjoyed golf and was a member of the Hon-E-Kor Ladies Wednesday League until her mid-80s. She also enjoyed traveling, bowling and playing bridge.

She was an active member of Our Saviorís Lutheran Church for many years and especially loved Bible study.

She moved to Cedar Bay West in 2000 and to Chest-nut in 2005.

Laura touched the lives of many people and will be fondly remembered by her family and by all who knew her.

Survivors include her sister, Delilah Leifer of Wauwatosa; "double cousin," Lucille Shepard of Milwaukee; two nephews, James Leifer of Wauwatosa and Ronald (Sherrill) Leifer of West Bend; a great-niece, Sara (Jeremy) Roloff of Milwaukee; and a great-nephew, Eric Leifer of Corpus Christi, Texas; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sister, LaVerne Hron; and two brothers-in-law.

Funeral services for Laura will be held at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Our Saviorís Lutheran Church (1044 S. Silverbrook Drive, West Bend, WI 53095) with Pastor Pam Morolla officiating.

A private burial will take place the following day at Washington County Memorial Park.

Friends and family may visit from 3 p.m. until the time of service at 4:30 p.m. at church only.

Lauraís family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Cedar Lake Health Care Center for caring for Laura, especially to Hospice and the nursing staff on Chestnut for their loving care and support.
