Barbara E. Kern
Barbara E. Kern, nee Coulter, of West Bend, died on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008 at her home with her family by her side, following a two-year battle with cancer at the age of 70 years.
She was born to Ervin and Geraldine Coulter on March 5, 1938 in Milwaukee. She grew up on the family farm in the town of Wayne. Barbara graduated from Kewaskum High School in 1956.
On Oct. 20, 1956, she was united in marriage to Richard A. Kern at St. Theresa’s Church in Theresa. Following their marriage, Barbara and Richard made their home in West Bend. She was a devoted wife and mother. Her life was centered on raising their family of seven children.
Once their children were grown, she enjoyed her grandchildren. Whether it was playing cards, attending their different activities, or just being there for them, she was a caring and attentive grandmother.
She also was an all-around sports fan, enjoying both professional and amateur sports. However, she particularly enjoy-ed the events in which her grandchildren participated.
Survivors include her husband Richard; seven children, Mary Jo (Eugene) Helnes of West Bend, Randal of West Bend, Donald (Suzanne) of Hartford, William (Janice) Annandale, Virg., Susan (Roger) Devenport of Three Lakes, Joan (Doug) Savard of West Bend and Daniel of Milwaukee; 13 grandchildren, Eric, Jason, Scott, Emily, Anna, Sean, Sydney, Abe, Jimmy, Mitchel, Randy, Adam and Shelly; eight brothers and sisters, Allen (Ilse) Coulter of Santa Anna, Calif., Ronald (Janet) Coulter of Theresa, Patricia (Jake) Wiesner of West Bend, Ervin Jr., Wayne (Pat) Coulter of San Diego, Calif., Teresa Vorpahl of West Bend, Mike (Ellen) Coulter of Allenton and Bob (Ginger) Coulter of Colorado; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Sandra, one brother, Jimmy Coulter, and two sisters, Susie Coulter and Mary Schmidt.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at 6:30 p.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Fr. Gerald Brittain presiding. Burial will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church only on Tuesday from 5 until 6:15 p.m.
