Verna Luise Moeller, 101
Verna Luise Moeller (Dobbratz), 101, of
West Bend, passed away quietly Monday afternoon, Sept. 1, 2008, at her
home.
She was born Nov. 22, 1906, in Milwaukee to the late Louis and Ida (Otto)
Dobbratz.
In June 1924, she graduated with honors in the first class of girls from
Milwaukee University School. She attended the University of
Wisconsin-Madison where she met Arnold Moeller.
She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. With a mathematics major
and a French minor she graduated with honors in 1928.
For one school year she taught algebra and geometry in Lake Mills.
On Oct. 4, 1930, she was united in marriage with Arnold H. Moeller at
Luther Memorial Chapel in Shorewood.
They moved to West Bend and joined St. John’s Lutheran Church. She was a
charter member of St. John’s Guild, served as its president and on the
committee that visited shut-in-members of the church. She was a founding
member of the Altar Guild.
She was a member of the Citizens Advisory Board for St. Joseph’s
Community Hospital and served as secretary for 10 years. She was a member
of the West Bend Women’s Club and the West Bend Country Club.
Verna had a loving heart, was truly caring and compassionate and was a
friend to many. She enjoyed living in the home she and her husband Arnold
had built in 1934.
She was a gracious hostess, excellent cook and baker. Holidays were
celebrated by extended family at her home every year.
She enjoyed many years of travel both throughout the United States and
around the world. She truly loved playing bridge and was an excellent
player.
She is survived by her three children, Marilyn (William) Holmquist of West
Bend, John (Ann) of Hortonville, William (Joanne) of Scottsdale Ariz; nine
grandchildren, Ann (Douglas) West, John (Sue) Holmquist. Susan (Scott)
Alexander, Eric (Leslie) Moeller, Mark (Pamela) Moeller, Elizabeth (Bryan)
Griesbach, Brita, Andrew, and Shere Moeller; 16 great-grandchildren,
Christopher, Matthew and Peter West, Kelly, Michael and Caroline Holmquist,
David and Kathryn Alexander, Jack, Gray and Virginia Moeller, Joseph,
Nicholas and Allicia Moeller, Austin and Bridget Griesbach; a
sister-in-law, Norma Moeller; nieces, nephew and other relatives and
friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Arnold; two
brothers, Walter and Elvin; and a sister, Esther.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Ev.
Lutheran Church, 809 S Sixth Ave., West Bend, with the Rev. Jeff Dorth and
the Rev. George Mumm officiating.
Visitation will be Saturday at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of
the service. Internment will follow in Washington County Memorial Park,
West Bend. Memorials to St. John’s Lutheran Church or Concordia
