Mabel Else Koepke
Mabel Else Koepke, 92, a lifelong resident of Oconomowoc, passed away on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Shorehaven Health Care Center.
Mabel was born on Aug. 20, 1916, the daughter of Albert and Emelie. After graduating from Oconomowoc High School, she worked on the family’s dairy and hog farm with her parents and brothers, Hilbert and Harry. Though farming was considered a man’s work, Mabel was an integral part of the Koepke Brothers Farm. She loved the land and the animals - to her, farming was both a career and a hobby. After a tractor accident forced her to leave the farm, Mabel cared for her sister, Anne Kaddatz, and later for her brothers. Fiercely independent, Mabel will be remembered for her kind heart, always speaking her mind, and her generosity to family and neighbors.
She is survived by her sister, Mollie Kaliebe, of West Bend; nephews, Alan, James and Dave Koepke, Ken and Ron Kaliebe; niece Karen Retzer; and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harvey, Hilbert and Harry Koepke; and sister, Anne Kaddatz.
Friends may visit on Thursday April 9, 2009, from 9 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11 a.m., all at St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 818 W. Wisconsin Ave., Oconomowoc. Final rest will be at LaBelle Cemetery. Memorials to St. Matthew’s Evangelical Lutheran Church or Shorehaven Health Center are appriciated.
