Lyle E. Hetzel Jr.

Lyle E. Hetzel Jr. of Grafton entered into eternal life on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at the age of 84. He went peacefully in his home, in the presence of his sister, Joy; his hospice nurse, Ryan; his son, Gary; and daughter, Donna. 

Lyle was born on Nov. 1, 1924 in Arlington, Iowa, to A. Lyle Hetzel and Neva Pattison Hetzel, who had preceded him in death. He was raised in Maywood, Ill., spending summers with his grandparents in Iowa on the farm. In 1942, Lyle entered the U.S. Army at the age of 17 to fight in World War II in France. He remained in the Army until 1946, when he was honorably discharged and joined his mother and sister who had moved to Grafton. He met and married Hilda Kiehnau on Jan. 1, 1948 and raised six children.

He worked for Riebe Olds as an auto mechanic for 20 years and then worked for Power Products (Tecumseh) for 20 years until he retired. In his younger years, he was active in the American Legion where he served as chaplain and commander. He enjoyed bowling and golfing with his children and grandchildren. He was very fond of his 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Lyle is survived by his sister, Joy (Pete) Haupt; his six children, Mary (Ray) Vollrath, Donna Beatty, Marcella (Dennis) Wilde, Lyle (Janet) Hetzel Jr., David (Gloria) Hetzel, and Gary Hetzel.  He is also survived by his 16 grandchildren, James (Katie) Vollrath, Ann Vollrath, Bill (Patty) Beatty, Sheila (Mike) Hinkley, Bob Beatty, Ivana (Finn Welling) Beatty, Juanita Marhefka, Tammy (Jim) Thomas, Wendy (Paul) Greif, Joel (Martha) Hetzel, Lisa (Marshall) Salisbury, Heidi (Nate) Littlefield, Tyson Hetzel, Todd Hetzel, Matthew Hetzel and Joshua Hetzel. He is also survived by 21 great-grandchildren, Gwen and Beth Beatty, Taylor Leighty, Dustin, Casper, and Patience Hinkle, Maverick, Trent, Cooper, and Colt Welling, Shannon and Joseph Marhefka, Jake and Jessie Thomas, Leah Wilde, Luke, Ben, and Cloe Hetzel, Indiana Salisbury, Ian and Ryker Littlefield. He is survived by his nephew, Mike Haupt; and niece, Jane (Gary) Beardsly, and great nephew, Jason (Lorie) Beardsly; and daughter, Amber; son Aaron and other family and friends.

The visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at Mueller Funeral Home in Grafton. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m. with Chaplain Cindy Kalies from Heartland Home Healthcare and Hospice officiating.  Family friend Nancy Knetter sang at the funeral.  Interment took place at Zur Ruhe Cemetery in Cedarburg.
