Olga A. Munes (nee
Olga A. Munes (nee Hanson) was born to eternal life on Friday, April 24, 2009, at the age of 98.
She was born on Dec. 11, 1910 to Charles and Caroline (nee Jacobson) Hanson in Charles Mix County, S.D., where her parents homesteaded a 160-acre farm. As a 9-year-old child, her father taught her to drive the Model T so she could take her mother to town for shopping. Her father would take her fishing frequently and in recent years, she still enjoyed fishing. Up to three years ago she would occasionally go fishing with her family. She even went ice fishing on Pike Lake in Hartford for the first time in her life when she was 94.
In 1937, she moved to Grafton with her mother and a friend, looking for work. Her father moved here later. She met her future husband, Carl Munes, where he worked at the Clausing-Liebau Hardware store. He owned a Harley Davidson and asked her if she would like a ride, and that was the start of their friendship. On Jan. 28, 1939, they were married at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Grafton. They enjoyed taking trips on their motorcycle, and the love of motorcycles never ended for Olga. When she was 92 years old, she enjoyed her last ride on a friend’s motorcycle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Munes, and her parents.
