Virgil A. Bird, 82

Virgil A. Bird of West Bend passed away on Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Aurora Medical Center in Hartford at 82.

Virgil was born on Oct. 17, 1927, in Beaver Dam to Arthur and Verona (nee Wolf) Bird. Virgil attended Beaver Dam High School. After his schooling, Virgil sailed on the Great Lakes before going into the U.S. Army in 1945 and serving in Germany during WWII. On Sept. 8, 1948, Virgil married Agnes Nigh at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kewaskum and together they raised their four sons in West Bend.

Virgil worked at the Gehl Co. from 1950 until 1990 in the parts department and retired after 40 years. His passions in life were the Green Bay Packers and being an active member of the Knights of Columbus, third degree. As a member, he was the crew leader for the Friday night fish fry and the captain of the annual Tootsie Roll drive for his area. He especially loved cleaning cars for friends and relatives and spent much of his spare time playing sheepshead and 500 with family and friends.

Virgil is survived by his wife Agnes of 61 years, his three sons Mark (Bonnie) of West Bend, Jim (Sue) of Jack-son, Al (Colleen) of Cedar, Minn. He is further survived by a daughter-in-law Linda Bird of West Bend, seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, sister Maxine (significant friend Ray) Chatterson of Beaver Dam, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Virgil is preceded in death by his parents, son Roger, brother-in-laws Bob Chatter-son, Lawrence Nigh, Willard Blanke, Gregor Nigh, sister-in-law Dorothy Nigh.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a,m, on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at St. Frances Cabrini of West Bend with Father Jeff Haines officiating. Interment to follow at Washington County Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the Phillip Funeral Home of West Bend on Wednesday, Dec. 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Vigil at 6:45 p.m. and Prayer Vigil at 7 p.m. Memorials are appreciated.
