Jerome M. Schmitt, 83

Jerome M. Schmitt, 83, of Rubicon, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009.

Jerome was born in Rubicon on Sept. 14, 1925, to Frank and Anna (Kiefer) Schmitt.

He was united in marriage to Helen Marie Boyle on Nov. 26, 1949, at St. John Catholic Church in Rubicon.

Jerome enlisted in the U.S. Army in February of 1944 and would serve in the European Theater of Operations with the 101st Airborne Division in Belgium and Germany. Jerome was with the 101st when they were cut off and surrounded by the Germans in Bastogne, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge.

When the war ended, Jerome was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division for occupation duties until he returned home in April of 1946.

He would earn the Bronze Star Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and Parachutist Badge for his service during World War II.

He worked construction for many years then went into farming in 1960. Jerome retired from farming in 1983. He enjoyed gardening, and loved watching the birds.

Jerome enjoyed his family and visiting his friends at the Hartford VFW Post 8834. He was a member of the Holy Name Society in Rubicon.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Helen; nine living children, Marilyn (Kenneth) Held, Michael (Jane), Thomas, Maureen (Jeff) Neu, Karen (Lathan) Leitzke, Daniel (Teri), Richard (Tracy), Nicholas (Virginia), Joseph Schmitt; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great grandchildren.

He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Jerome was preceded in death by his son Ryan, his brothers, sisters, brothers and sisters-in-law.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 19, 2009 at 7 p.m. at the Shimon Funeral Home with the Rev. Alois Van Beek officiating. Family will greet family and friends on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Private interment at St. John Cemetery in Rubicon.
