Fr. Joseph-Mary "Jack" Flanery

Fr. Joseph-Mary "Jack" Flanery, O.C.D., 87, was born to eternal life on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2009, at St. Anne’s Home in Milwaukee.

He was born in Rosiclare, Ill., on Christmas Day in 1921, the son of Dan and Celia (nee Brittan) Flanery. After serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II, he entered Maryknoll with the desire to serve the Church as a missionary. However, in 1948 he decided to enter the Discalced Carmelite Order in Brookline, Mass. He made his first profession of vows on May 4, 1949, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 4, 1955. He served the Carmelite Mission in the Philippines for 15 years. Fr. Joseph-Mary also taught at the Carmelite Minor Seminary in Petersborough, N.H., from 1956 to 1957. Upon his return from the Philippines in 1975, he served as Provincial Secretary at Youngstown, Ohio, and Holy Hill. He retired from active ministry in 1990, remaining at Holy Hill. Fr. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Pauline Flanery Downey. He is survived by the Discalced Carmelite Friars, relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 3, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m. with evening prayer at 5 p.m. in the Shrine Chapel, Basilica of Holy Hill, Hubertus. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 3 p.m. in the Main Church, Holy Hill, with burial following in the Carmelite Cemetery on the Holy Hill grounds. The Very Rev. John Sullivan, O.C.D. will officiate.
