Robert 'Bob' Birnschein, 69

Robert “Bob” Birnschein, 69, of Port Washington, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee.

He was born Sept. 24, 1939 in Door County, son of Bruno and Augusta Roell Birnschein. After graduating from Sevastopol High School in 1957, he served in the U.S. Army.  On Sept. 17, 1960, he married Janet Leist in Door County. On July 1, 1963, Bob began his career with the Grafton Police Department, retiring in 1996. In 1975, he started Wisconsin's first Safety Town organization with the Grafton Junior Woman’s Club.

He was active in the Grafton Youth Hunting organization as a master instructor for hunter safety in the Wisconsin Hunter Education Program for 32 years. Bob was a past president of the Wisconsin Juvenile Association. He was also a member of the Saukville Rifle and Pistol Club, enjoyed hunting, and spending time at the family homestead in Door County.
He is survived by his loving wife, Janet; his two children, Craig (Sue) Birnschein of Cedarburg and Amy (Terry) Wiebe of Port Washington; three grandchildren, Kimberly, Kayla, and Morgan; his great granddaughter Cadence; four sisters, Carol Halstead, Joyce (Warren) Halstead, Eileen (Everett) Roberts and Kay Wolter, all of Door County.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Art; and his sister, Doris.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 20, at 2 p.m. at the Eernisse Funeral Home, 1600 W. Grand Ave., Port Washington, with Pastor Don Zahurance officiating. Visitation was at the funeral home Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the services.

Burial with full military honors will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Grafton.
