Leone E. Merritt

Leone E. Merritt (nee Poehls), 88, of West Bend, passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Cedar Lake Community.

Leone was born on June 30, 1920, to Louis and Adeline (nee Lohrey) Poehls in Algoma. She graduated from Algoma High School, class of 1938. After high school, she moved to Milwaukee, married and raised her family. Leone worked at Mitchell International Airport in the coffee shop for many years and then at St. Francis Hospital in the restaurant for many years. She loved sewing, gardening, taking walks, but especially spending time with her grandchildren. Leone was a member of the Oklahoma Ave. Lutheran Church and sang in the choir.

Leone is survived by her children Janet (Bob) Werner of West Bend and James (Judy) Meyer of Rhode Island. She is further survived by her grandchildren; David (Julie) Werner, David Sotar, Jackie (Tim) Drover; great-grandchildren Madeline Drover, Ethan Drover and Danielle Werner; sisters-in-law Helen Johnson of Georgia, and June (Gerald) Holtz of Algoma; cousins, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her daughter Mary Sotar; two brothers, Harvey and Marvin Poehls; and a sister Violet Agacinski.

A funeral Sservice will be on Thursday, April 2, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Johnís Evangelical Lutheran Church of West Bend, 809 S. 6th Ave., with the Rev. Jeff Dorth officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Algoma on Friday, April 3 at noon. Visitation will be at the church only on Thursday, April 2 from 10 a.m. until time of service.
