Memorials to Milwaukee Lutheran High School and Trinity Church-Freistadt are appreciated.

Norma, child of God, was born on June 8, 1920, to Paul and Emma (nee Schoenberg) Neubauer, in Waterloo, Iowa. Attending grade school and high school in Oelwein (Class of 1937), she graduated from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, in 1939. She then went to Milwaukee to finish her registered nursing degree at the Milwaukee Hospital School of Nursing. She completed her work there in September 1942. Along the way, she met a young man, Richard J. Ungrodt, at a picnic in Jacobus Park. This chance meeting grew into courtship and then marriage on Feb. 21, 1943. Living first in Milwaukee and then in Thiensville on Ellen Becker Lane, they moved to Freistadt in 1954 where they continued to live until 2007, when they moved to Harrison Home in Cedarburg.

During their years in Freistadt she harvested many gardens, feeding their family of five children and any friends they could give away zucchini to! Fruit trees and rhubarb helped Mom fill the root cellar with jams and preserves and the large garden filled the freezer with vegetables. There were always flowers in season to sit in a vase on the dining room table and the window sills of the living room area! Momís favorites were pansies and lily of the valleys and they still grow around the house.

Norma was active in the Ladies Aid at Trinity Lutheran Church of Freistadt and in the Ladies Guild at Milwaukee Lutheran High School where all five children attended. Kathryn (Ernst) was the first daughter, followed by Virginia (Masengarb), Margaret (Ungrodt), son Richard, and Joy (Young). After years of nursing at home with her children through all the falls and cuts and bruises of childhood, Norma returned to nursing in the mid 1960s at Lutheran Hospital of Milwaukee, She also worked for the Public Health Service in Ozaukee County, and the Stolper Steel Mfg Company in Menomonee Falls.

Norma traveled the world with Richard, going to engineering meetings around the U.S., visiting children and grandchildren in Alaska, Michigan, Indiana, Montana, and Japan. Her trips to Germany, Italy, Greece, Spain, Egypt, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Costa Rica were all shared with her family via her travel journals which helped her remember what they did when, and which helped all of us see the world through her eyes. We treasure this record of that part of her life. Her love of travel continues unto the third and fourth generations of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She continued her writings with yearly Christmas letters sent to family and friends describing family life and travel. All of the children helped with the annual addressing and mailing of these letters as well as the yearly (multiple) bakings of stollen, a German Christmas bread that was given as gifts to friends from church and engineering groups and high school groups! Several of her children have continued this tradition using her recipe to give gifts to our friends and family.

Sheepshead card club was a welcome diversion from all the work of raising children and attending Milwaukee School of Engineering functions with her husband. The couples who started playing cards together in the 1950s are still friends today!

She is survived by her loving husband of 66+ years, Richard J Ungrodt; children, Kathryn (Ricardo) Ernst, Virginia (David) Masengarb, Margaret (Curt Renner) Ungrodt, Richard (Jane) Ungrodt and Joy (Wesley) Young; grandchildren, Devin and Aaron Ernst; Jennifer and Eric (Holly) Masengarb; Joel (Amy) and Kyle Renner; Nathan and Christian Ungrodt; Daniel, Amy, Aaron and Jordan Young; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Gillian and Nicholas Ernst. She is predeceased by her parents, Paul and Emma Neubauer, and sister, Rosalma Mardorf.
