Dorothy N. Washburn, 94

Dorothy N. Washburn, surrounded by her loving family, passed away peacefully at Hartford Care Center at the age of 94 years, 9 months and 6 days, on Thursday, April 15, 2010.

She was born July 8, 1915, in Neosho, the daughter of John and Ida (nee Schwantes) Hein. She married Clinton Washburn Jan. 24, 1940, in Hartford. Dorothy worked as a prison guard during World War II at the Schwartz Ballroom when it housed prisoners of war. She was a foster mother, baby sitter for years, worked at Hemp Mills and Libby’s Canning Company in Hartford. She also worked as a nurse’s aid at Hartford Care Center until she retired. Dorothy enjoyed playing 500 rummy and spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Duane (Rosemarie) Hein of Chino Valley, Ariz., Elaine Rosin of Hartford and Mary Ann Burmeister of Hartford; her sister, Marie Schultz of Horicon; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Clinton in October 1997; her daughter, Sherri Lynn Schmelzer in May 2004; her son-in-law, Vernon Rosin in June 2002; Raymond Burmeister in March 2008; her brothers, Ervin, Bill, Fred, Leo, Andrew, Elmer and Charles; her sisters, Viola, Francis and Anne; and her grandson, Bruce Rosin in June 2001.

Visitation is Tuesday, April 20, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Berndt-Ledesma Funeral Home in Hartford. Funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Douglas Livingston will officiate. Interment will take place at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
