Harold V. ‘Hap’ Fuchs, 92


Harold V. "Hap" Fuchs, 92, of West Bend, died Tuesday, April 20, 2010, at the Aurora Medical Center Washington County in Hartford.

He was born Nov. 26, 1917, in Waukesha to the late August and Martha (nee Mueller) Fuchs, and married Mary E. McCollow on June 8, 1943, at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Neosho. Mary preceded him in death on Oct. 1, 1997.

Hap was raised in Waukesha and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Following his discharge, he and Mary settled in West Bend where he began his employment with West Bend Mutual Insurance Company. Hap retired as president of West Bend Mutual in 1982.

He was very influential in bringing blood drives to West Bend and eventually the West Bend Blood Bank.

Hap and Mary were founding members of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church and he was a longtime member of the West Bend Kiwanis Club.

Survivors include his four children, Martin (Mary) Fox of Belmont, Calif., Martha Fuchs of Huntington Beach, Calif., Joseph (Joni) of Omaha, Neb., and Betty Fuchs of Milwaukee; five grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Hap was preceded in death by his parents, August and Martha Fuchs; his wife of 54 years, Mary; two brothers and four sisters.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, April 23, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Angels Catholic Church. Please meet at church for Mass. The Rev. Gerald Brittain will preside. Burial will take place in St. Bartholomew Cemetery in Neosho. Visitation will be Thursday at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Washington County Food Pantry or the Threshold Inc. are appreciated.
