Johanna M. Sandstrom, 93

Johanna M. Sandstrom (nee Becker), 93, of West Bend, died Thursday, April 22, 2010, in Casa Grande, Ariz.

She was born April 4, 1917, in the town of Trenton to the late John and Margaret (nee Schueller) Becker and married Howard H. Sandstrom on Sept. 11, 1948, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Newburg. Howard preceded her in death on Sept. 9, 1996.

Johanna earned her beauticianís license in Milwaukee and worked at Barteltís Beauty Shop in West Bend before moving to Arizona. She moved back to Newburg and operated her own beauty shop until her marriage to Howard. They settled in Montrose, Calif., before moving back to West Bend in 1973. Howard and Johanna enjoyed working together at St. Vincent DePaul in West Bend for four years. After their retirement they spent 10 years enjoying the snowbird life, spending their winters in Arizona until Howardís health started to fail.

Survivors include her three children, John of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, Peter of Casa Grande, Ariz., and Chris (Juergen) Helm of West Bend; two grandchildren, Michael (Carina) Helm and Jonathan Helm and her great-grandson Alexander Michael Helm. She is further survived by other relatives and friends.

Johanna was preceded in death by her parents, John and Margaret; her husband, Howard; and eight siblings.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Saturday, May 1, 2010, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in West Bend with the Rev. Jeffery Haines presiding. Burial will follow in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Newburg. Visitation will be Saturday, at the church only from 9:30 a.m. until 11:15 a.m.
