Arthur John Jenswold, 78

Arthur John Jenswold, 78, of Watertown, passed away on Monday, Dec. 20, 2010, at AngelsGrace Hospice in Oconomowoc.

He was born in Baraboo on Oct. 21, 1932, the son of Arthur and Esther (Nelson) Jenswold. He became a child of God through baptism on Jan. 22, 1933, at St. Johnís Lutheran Church in Baraboo. John attended St. Johnís grade school and Baraboo High School. In 1954, he graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn., with a degree in elementary education. His first teaching assignment was to St. Peterís Lutheran School in rural Manitowoc County at a one-room school house. From there, he went on to teach at Palos Hts. Lutheran School in Palos Hts., Ill., and Calvary Lutheran School in Thiensville.

In addition to teaching, he served as principal, organist and choir director. In  1968, John and his family moved to Watertown where he served at St. Markís Evangelical Lutheran Church for the next 42 years, teaching until 1996 and thereafter, assisting in the music department until September of this year.
In 1956, John married Lois Cares in Milwaukee. Their marriage was blessed with three children. After retiring from teaching, John was a guide and volunteer at  the Octagon House and volunteered at the Watertown Hospital. He enjoyed travel to scenic and historic places together with his wife and long-time friends, Sue and Don Holzueter. First and foremost, he loved his family and looked forward to gatherings, small and large, of children and grandchildren.

John was a member of St. Markís Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lois, of Watertown; his children, Carolyn (Kasey) Doss of Conifer, Colo.; John (Kris) Jenswold of East Troy; Joel (Susan) Jenswold of Powell, Ohio; and his six grandchildren, Joshua, Brittany, Jacob, Nicolas, Nathan and Rachel. He is further survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, the Rev. Gerhardt and Marianne Cares; his aunt, Eleonore Cares-Franzmann (Gerry) and many nieces, nephews and friends.
John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marian; and two brothers, Raymond and Fred. He was the last member of his immediate family.

Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 23, 2010, at 1 p.m. at St. Markís Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Karl Walther officiating. Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown. Relatives and friends paid their respects at the Hafemeister Funeral Home, 611 E. Main St., Watertown, on Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. They may also pay their respects at the church today from noon until the time of the service.
