Vernon C. Schmidt, 80
Vernon C. Schmidt, 80, of West Bend, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee.
He was born on Feb. 25, 1929, in Hardwick, Minn., to the late Herman and Irene (nee Splear) Schmidt. Following high school Vern became a building contractor in Minnesota, owning his own construction company called Schmidt Construction. In 1982, he came to the West Bend area to help his daughter and son-in-law remodel a restaurant that they had purchased. It was here that he met the love of his life and never left. On Dec. 11, 1982, Vern was united in marriage to Sandra Anderson. Vern moved his construction company to West Bend and in 1995 he and his wife, Sandy, also started a restaurant called Sandy’s Barton Café.
Vern is survived by his wife, Sandy of West Bend; his two daughters, Corliss Kazemba of Cape Coral, Fla., and Debbie Buck of West Bend; his step-daughter, Denise Stadelmayer of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and his six grandchildren, Taylor Kazemba, Hallie (Christopher) Olson, Travis Buck, Brittany (Josh) Peterson, Robert Stadelmayer and Dylan Stadelmayer. He is further survived by Brian Buck, Brad Buck, Sheri Osland, Gary Beck, LaVonne Schmidt, Darrell Schmidt, and Judith (Jack) Chaltry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Irene Schmidt; his brother, Merlyn Schmidt; his sons-in-law, Wes Kazemba and Ron Buck; his step-son, Terry Beck; his parents-in-law, Robert and Evelyn Anderson; and his sister-in-law, Patricia (Jack) Sanborn.
A memorial service in honor of Vern will be held on Friday, Feb. 26, 2010, at 6 p.m. at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church,809 S. 6th St. West Bend. Visitation will be on Friday at the church from 3 p.m. until the time of service.
