Jan Rae Goecke, 61
On Saturday, June 5, 2010, Jan Rae Goecke (nee Christensen) passed into the loving arms of our Lord surrounded by her loving family following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born July 2, 1948, to the Rev. A.S. and Mary Ellen Christensen in Twin Falls, Idaho. She graduated from Watertown High School, attended Wartburg College and eventually earned a degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She later earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Jan also had the opportunity to study abroad in Peru and Valencia, Spain. She married her high school sweetheart, Dennis, on Aug. 1, 1970.
Jan was a Spanish teacher at Grafton High School for 32 years. She took numerous groups of students to Mexico and Costa Rica. She was actively involved with her church, Grace Lutheran in Grafton.
She is survived by her husband, her parents, her parents-in-law, Floyd and Marge Goecke of Watertown, her children, Fafani (Jason) Weinzierl, Drs. Mariah (Michael) Zack, and Josiah (companion Mary Beth Arthurs) Goecke. She was the devoted grandmother or “Abuelita” to Samuel, Grace, Raena, and Harm. Other survivors include her siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles.
A memorial visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 9, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Grafton. An additional visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 10, followed by a memorial service at noon.
Following the service, guests are asked to celebrate her life with a reception at Riveredge Nature Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations to “Profe Park” (baseball park) are requested.
