Margaret Carlson, 88


Margaret Carlson (nee Muenk), 88, passed away May 27, 2010, following a short illness.

Margaret was born on Aug. 25, 1921, to Edwin and Olga (nee Haug) Muenk in West Bend. She attended Kewaskum schools, graduating in 1938 as valedictorian. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1942 with an education degree. She taught school in Big Rapids, Mich., until her marriage to Harold "Stubby" Carlson on May 19, 1944. As a Navy pilotís wife, she moved several times until the family settled in West Bend in 1950.

Margaret obtained her masterís degree in library science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She worked at the West Bend Community Memorial Library as a librarian for a short time until becoming the librarian for West Bend East High School, where she remained until her retirement in 1987.

Following retirement, Margaret remained active as a volunteer at the West Bend Schools, West Bend Community Memorial Library, the Washington County Historical Society and the Museum of Wisconsin Art. She was also a member of Retired Teachers, Womanís Club and the Red Hat Society.

Margaret is survived by her two children, Dr. Karen Carlson (Dr. Ken Phillips) and Linda (John) Esselman. She is further survived by a son-in-law, Richard Rosenthal; three grandchildren, Amy (Chuck) Marx, Brian Esselman and Kari Esselman (fiancť, Matt Giesfeldt); sister-in-law, Evelyn (Duane) Bruder; and a brother-in-law, Vernon (Carol) Bartelt; as well as other family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold "Stubby," in 197;, daughter, Margaret "Cathie" Rosenthal in 2008.

A memorial service for Margaret will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 13, 2010, at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel of West Bend. The family will greet friends at the funeral home on Sunday, June 13, from 1 p.m. until time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the West Bend Community Memorial Library or Washington County Historical Society are appreciated.
