Louise K. Ratzel, 75

Louise K. Ratzel (nee Knowles), 75, passed away on Friday, Nov. 19, 2010.

Louise was born on July 26, 1935, in Chicago, to Albert and Louise (nee Farrer) Knowles. She married Thomas Ratzel on July 28, 1956, and the couple moved to West Bend. She raised four children while also working at Enger Kress Co. and Klotz’s Piggly Wiggly. Louise was also recording secretary for the AFL-CIO, Business Club and Omega Lambda Delta at the University of Wisconsin - Washington County for many years. Over the years, up until recently, Louise also did quite a bit of volunteer work including such organizations as the United Way of Washington County Partners of St. Joseph’s, Big Brothers and Big Sisters and at the senior centers. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, reading and playing bingo.

In 1998, Louise retired, and 50 years after beginning her college education at UW-Oshkosh, Louise reenrolled in courses to continue her education. She graduated from UW-Washington County in 2002 with an associate’s degree in business and then went on to receive her bachelor of arts in organizational administration in 2004. During her college years, Louise was also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa fraternity from 2001 to 2002.

Louise is survived by her four children, Michele (Matthew) Zeller, Joan (Randall Sr.) Scott, Alan (Cindy) Ratzel and Nancy (Carl) Steinert; 10 grandchildren, Angela (Rick Seidl) Reimer, Dennis Reimer Jr., Thomas (Leona) Scott, Randall Scott Jr., Sara (Adam) Baumhardt, Jonathan (Tina) Ratzel, Matthew Ratzel, Theresa Ratzel, Timothy (Stephanie) Steinert and Tammy (Dan Cartwright) Biever; and 14 great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her sister, Patricia (Jerry) Lindner; and brother, Albert (Peg) Knowles Jr.; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Louise is preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Ratzel, and her parents.

A memorial service for Louise will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel, 1420 W. Paradise Drive, West Bend, with the Rev. Patrick Wendt presiding. Gathering will be at the funeral home only from 4 p.m. until time of service. Inurnment Washington County Memorial Park.
