W. Archie Hughes passed away Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at his home in Waupaca at the age of 80 years.

He was born on March 2, 1930, to Walter and Hilda (nee Yahr) Hughes and was raised in his younger years in Phelps. He married Gloria Jean Smith on Sept. 5, 1953.

Archie will be remembered for many things. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also loved socializing and vacationing in the north woods. He had the unique ability to make something out of nothing and had a knack for tinkering.

Archie is survived by his children, Scott of Phelps, Margie Braun (Tom) of Waupaca, Connie Gaedtke (Jim) of West Bend, Penny McGrath (Tim) of Whitefish Bay and Tracy Piontek (George) of Richfield. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Roder (Wally) of Crandon; grandchildren, Anna, Ryan (Kerry), Jacob (Kelly), Cory, Hilary, Matthew, Katy, Jeremiah, Chad, Brittany, Rachel, Aaron, Haily and Brooke; step-grandchildren, Jason and Allison; great-grandchildren, Autumn, Julia, Archie, Theodore and Cian. Archie is further survived by other relatives and many friends.

Archie is preceded in death by his wife, Gloria; father, Walter; mother, Hilda; brother, James; grandson, Caleb; and mother-in-law, Hedy Krueger.

A funeral service for Archie will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel, 1420 W. Paradise Drive, West Bend. Visitation will be at the funeral home only from 3:30 p.m. until time of service. Interment of cremains will take place at Washington County Memorial Park at a later time. Memorials are appreciated to the West Bend Education Foundation or the Waupaca BackPack Food Program.
