Ralph J. Huiras, 92

Ralph J. Huiras of Cedarburg passed away on Sept. 27, 2010, after a brief illness.

Ralph was born on June 8, 1918, in Milwaukee to Peter and Rose Keller Huiras. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marianne (nee Ledgerwood); and his sister, Marge Randula.

He was the beloved husband of Barbara; dear father of Lynn (Ed) Ferguson of Portland, Ore., and Peter Huiras of Cedarburg; loving grandfather of Cliff (Stephanie) Kane of Darien, Conn., and Stacy Kane of Portland, Ore.; fond brother of Ethel Skemp; dear friend and law partner of William J. Farrell and Carl Gerold. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Ralph graduated from Port Washington High School. He did his undergraduate studies and received his law degree from Marquette University. Ralph was in the FBI from 1941 to 1948.

He married Marianne Ledgerwood on Jan. 20, 1945, in Knoxville, Tenn. After leaving the FBI, he came back to Port Washington and joined in partnership with Carl Gerold. Ralph and Marianne moved to Cedarburg in 1948 and four years later, they purchased a farm that is still in the family today. For a while in the 1980s, Ralph also stepped into banking, leading Thiensville State Bank, which became a holding company and acquired more banks, built others, merged and merged again.

He was actively involved in the town of Cedarburg as the town attorney and town chairman. Ralph was also a former member and chairman of the Ozaukee County Board of Supervisors.

He was also a longtime board member of Carlson Tool in Cedarburg, a former member of the Mequon-Thiensville Rotary Club, and an active member and supporter of St. Francis Borgia Church in Cedarburg. He received the Annual Civic Award from the Greater Cedarburg Community Foundation in 2005.
Ralph was awarded the Marquette University Law School Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008.

A funeral Mass is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m. at St. Francis Borgia Church-North, 1375 Covered Bridge Road, Cedarburg, with a reception to follow. Visitation will be Friday at the church from 4 p.m. until the time of the Mass. Private interment will be at St. Francis Borgia Cemetery, Cedarburg.
