Caroline B. Birr, 90
Caroline B. Birr (nee Bernard), 90, of West Bend, passed away Monday, April 11, 2011, at Samaritan Health Center in West Bend.
She was born on Sept. 24, 1920, in the town of Lomira to the late Nickolaus and Mary (nee Kuester) Bernard. Caroline was united in marriage to Clarence "Spatz" Birr on Nov. 25, 1939, in Mayville. Together they made their home in West Bend. Clarence passed away March 2, 1971.
Caroline served on the Washington County Sheriff Department staff as Matron and Special Deputy until 1978. She also was the volunteer coordinator at the Samaritan Home until retiring in 1985. After retiring she did volunteer work for the United Way of Washington County and the St. Frances Cabrini prayer chain. She was also a member of the Women of the Moose since 1957.
Caroline is survived by two daughters, Carol A. (Thomas) Puerling and Bonnie L. (Robert) Neumann, both of West Bend; four grandchildren, Laurie Puerling, Merrie Jo (Randy) Dricken, James (Michelle) Naus, and Michael Naus; six great-grandchildren, Tia, Britta, Skylar, Connor, Ethan and Ryan; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence; a grandson, John T. Puerling; three sisters, Emily Kollmansberger, Elizabeth Bernard and Marie Fellenz; and three brothers, Nickolaus Bernard, Alphonse Bernard and Joseph Bernard.
A Mass of Christian burial in remembrance of Caroline will be held on Saturday, April 16, at 11 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 1025 S. 7th Ave., West Bend. The Rev. Jeff Haines will be the presider and burial will follow in Holy Angels Cemetery, West Bend. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
