Anne M. Bauer, 93
Anne M. Bauer (nee Bernhardt), 93, of Madison, formerly of West Bend, died on Tuesday, April 12, 2011, at Oakwood Village in Madison.
She was born on April 24, 1917, in Albany, N.Y., to the Charles and Anna (nee Donovan) Bernhardt.
After graduating from high school, Anne went on to nursing school where she earned her degree. She later enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving from Aug. 1, 1942, to Feb. 16, 1946. During World War II, she served as a registered nurse, attaining the rank of Captain. It was during this service that she met her husband, Carroll Bauer. They were married in Albany, N.Y., on Sept. 27, 1945.
Following their war service, they moved to Wisconsin, living in Milwaukee, Elm Grove, Phillips and finally settling in West Bend.
In addition to being a cherished wife, loving mother and proud grandmother, Anne was always there to help family and friends. Her generous spirit and love of family and friends will be greatly missed. She also was fond of flower gardening, knitting and crocheting.
Survivors include three children, Robert E. (Kristine) of Marshall, Terrence L. (Mary) of Hartford, Mich., and Bruce C. (Elizabeth) of Hartford, Mich.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll on February 16, 1994; her parents; a brother, Charles Bernhardt Jr.; and a grandson, Kilian Bauer.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, April 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church with the Rev. Nathan Reeseman presiding.
Burial will follow with military honors at Holy Cross Cemetery, Milwaukee. The family will greet relatives and friends during a period of visitation at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend on Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The family has requested memorials to the St. Frances Cabrini Education Fund or to Hospice Care Inc. in Madison.
