Margaret L. ‘Peggy’ Hoelz


Margaret L. "Peggy" Hoelz (nee Varnes) passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family after a three-year battle with cancer on Wednesday, April 27, 2011.

She was born on Jan. 18, 1926 in Chicago to the late Kenneth and Lucile (nee Grimes) Varnes.

As a child, the family moved to the West Bend area. Peggy graduated from Holy Angels Catholic grade school, and attended West Bend High School with the Class of 1944.

During World War II, she worked at Amity Leather Products Company and later became employed as an operator with the Wisconsin Telephone Company. At one time, Peggy was the only night telephone operator in the City of West Bend.

On Nov. 29, 1947, she was united in marriage to Darold M. Hoelz at Holy Angels Catholic Church.

In addition to being a loving wife, caring mother and proud grandmother, she enjoyed cooking, baking and housekeeping.

Survivors include her loving husband and best friend of 63 years Darold, two daughters Marylu (Robert) Heldt and Barbara (Brad) Haubrich; five grandchildren Ryan Heldt, Michael (Aleena) Heldt, Steven Haubrich, Amy Haubrich and Lisa Haubrich; five great-grandchildren Hailey, Brailynn, Amelia, Bradley and Madilyn; a brother-in-law Jerome (Valerie) Hoelz; other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers Kenneth (Violet) Varnes, Glenn Varnes, a nephew Patrick Varnes and her parents-inlaw Martin and Mae Hoelz.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 2 at 7 p.m. at the Schmidt Funeral Home in West Bend with Mr. Dan Schroeder officiating. Private burial will be in Our Savior's UCC Cemetery in Germantown. The family will greet relatives and friends during a period of visitation at the funeral home on Monday from 4 until 6:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials to St. Mary's Church, Our Savior's Cemetery Association or the American Cancer Society.
