Shirley M. Knuth, 87

Shirley M. Knuth, 87, of West Bend, formerly of Milwaukee, died on Thursday, July 28, 2011, at the Cedar Lake Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on April 1, 1924 in Milwaukee to the late Herbert G. and Lydia A. (nee Dix) Knuth.

For many years, Shirley taught home economics for the Milwaukee Public Schools. Following her retirement from teaching in the early 1980s, she moved to the West Bend area to be closer to her family. She then worked and volunteered at the health care center of Cedar Community, doing many clerical tasks.

Shirley was a gifted and talented singer. She sang as a soloist and with the choirs for many churches throughout the region.

Linda and Lee, Shirley’s niece and nephew, fondly recall the driver’s education lessons they received from Aunt Shirley. She patiently gave them extra instruction. Linda and Lee have many cherished memories of the time they spent with her, particularly the burgers, fries and onion rings at "The Ritz."

Survivors include her niece and nephew: Linda M. (Paul) Wolf of Idaho Falls, Idaho and Lee (Rosemary) Jones of Madison; other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law Elaine and Gordon Jones.

Interment services will be at Valhalla Memorial Gardens in Milwaukee on Thursday, Aug. 4, at 3:30 p.m. Memorials to the Cedar Community Foundation are appreciated.

Shirley’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the people at Cedar Community who cared for Shirley through multiple levels of care over the years.

The Schmidt Funeral Home of West Bend is serving the family.
