Thomas John Baitinger, 48

Thomas John Baitinger, formerly of Middleton, died on Monday, Jan.
24, 2011, at the age of 48. He was employed as a sergeant with the
St. Petersburg, Fla., Police Department where he was killed in the
line of duty.

After graduation from Middleton High School in 1981, Tom earned his
Bachelor’s Degree in Behavioral Science from the University of
Wisconsin-Madison in 1986. He proudly played trumpet in the
University of Wisconsin Marching Band in Rank One. The UW Marching
Band was Tom’s passion and he returned frequently to march with the
Alumni Band.

Tom served as an officer with Cottage Grove, Fitchburg, Middleton and
Dane County. He joined the St. Petersburg, Fla., Police Department
in 1996, and was promoted to sergeant in 2004. He earned his
Master’s Degree in Business Administration – Criminal Justice from
Saint Leo University in Florida in 2008. Tom died doing what he did
best, helping people and keeping people safe.

Tom is survived by his wife, Paige (Gayzagian) of Palmetto, Fla.; his
parents, Kenneth G. and Lulumarie (Lu) Baitinger of Middleton;
sisters, Amy Baitinger (David Anderson) of Cambridge, Jayne Baitinger-
Peterson (Tony Peterson) of Middleton; brother, Kenneth Mark
Baitinger (Patricia Ackerman) of Cedarburg; nephews, Jack Peterson,
Kiel Baitinger-Peterson, Robert Baitinger, Richard Baitinger, Matthew
Murphy, Christopher Gayzagian; nieces, Caroline Anderson, Catherine
Anderson, Elise Peterson, Marjorie Gayzagian, Madeline Murphy;
brothers-in-law, Lorne (Lisa) Gayzagian, Bruce Gayzagian; and sister-
in-law, Dawn (Gerard) Murphy.

Our son, brother, uncle, husband and friend will be missed by all who
knew him. He is a true hero who loved his work and truly loved his
wife and family.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. until
the time of Mass at 4:30 p.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, 7450
University Ave., Middleton. A memorial fund has been established for
the UW Marching Band in Tom’s name. Contributions can be sent to the
“Tom Baitinger Marching Band Fund” at the M&I Bank, 7447 University
Ave., Middleton, WI 53562.
