Paul Edwin Fuge, 86
Paul Edwin Fuge passed away peacefully at home Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, surrounded by family.
Although our hearts are greatly saddened at the passing of our husband, father, father-in-law, grandpa and great-grandpa, they are also filled with joyful hope.
He was born Feb. 20, 1924, in West Bend, to Herbert and Lydia Fuge. In 1945 he married June Margaret Miller.
He had a passion for sailing, starting at a young age with his first mate and future wife, June. He spent many happy years sailing and racing on Cedar Lake. His love for sailing and boats continued after their move to California. He and his family spent many weekends and vacations at sailboat races and functions. He and June were co-founders of the San Jose Sailing Club and organizers of Monterey Peninsula Yacht Clubís Paisano race, pouring their hearts into the promotion and organization of that race. He was also an avid water skier and snow skier. He passed the love of all these sports on to his children and grandchildren.
Paulís father owned a successful family plumbing and heating business, which is still operated by his nephew, Dan Fuge. Paul chose to separate from the family business and relocate to a warmer climate. He was hired by Honeywell Controls and moved with the family to Campbell, Calif., in 1957. In 1963, Paul began working on the Monterey Peninsula with Wilder & Jones, a mechanical contractor. In 1964 he opened his own business, Paul Fuge and Associates, and later started Energy Controls, which also was successful. His son, Paul James Fuge, continues to run the family business today, now with the name of Envirotemp.
Paul will be remembered as a gentle, caring, funny, mischievous man with a religious spirit and he brought his family up with all of these traits. His family was his anchor and kept him grounded. He often took his family camping and on ski trips so they could experience the ourdoors and the true wonders of life.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, June; his five children, Judy (Jim) Nelson of Seaside, Calif., Thomas (Barbara) Fuge of Grover Beach, Calif., Karen (Alfred) Hardman of Talent, Ore., Paul J. (Kathy) Fuge of Salinas, Calif., Eric (Valorie) Fuge of Bloomfield, Calif. He was a cherished grandfather of Jason (Edith) Nelson, Jeffrey (Stephanie) Nelson, and Jennifer (Garrett) Girod, Kevin (Allison) Fuge and Rachel (Matt) Zachary, Will and Kyle Hardman, Christopher (Stefany) Fuge, Nathan and Laurel Fuge and twins Mirandi and Forrest Dallas-Fuge; plus five greatgrandkids and one more on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Karl, Robert, Herbert and Richard.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life at noon on Feb. 12, 2011, at Messiah Lutheran Church, 801 High St., Santa Cruz, Calif. A reception will follow.
Donations can be made in lieu of flowers to either Hospice or Messiah Lutheran Church of Santa Cruz or the MPYC Junior Sailing Club.
The family thanks the Heartland Hospice of Monterey County and appreciates their loving care in tending to Paul during his final days.
