Fredrich ‘Fred’ Achterberg, 73


Fredrich C. "Fred" Achterberg, 73, of West Bend passed away Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, surrounded by his family.

He was born on Dec. 24, 1937, in Omro, to Paul and Esther (nee Rice) Achterberg. Fred grew up in the West Bend area, served in the U.S. Army and later became the branch manager for Glidden Paints in Brookfield and Green Bay. Fred was also the owner of DéCor Inc., a family contractor and decorating business, for over 30 years until his retirement in 2003. He was also a member and past governor of the West Bend Moose Lodge No. 1398. He also helped build the new addition to the lodge. Fred was also a member of American Legion Post No. 36 of West Bend.

Fred enjoyed and had many fond memories of hunting, boating and fishing on the Menomonie River at the Wisconsin border at Rivers Bend Campground for many years with his children and grandchildren.

Fred is survived by his spouse of 50 years, Janice; his children, Chloe (James) Wolf, Scott (friend, Christine) and Kim (Jeff) Sauter; his grandchildren, Tanya, Amanda, Kaitlyn and Alexis Wolf, Lindsey and Colin Sauter, Travis and Hope Achterberg. He is further survived by three sisters, Janet (David) Bronner, Sharon Fuller and Carol (John) Bohn; one uncle, Len Rice; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister; three brothers; and parents-in-law, Russ and Reese Kent.

A memorial service for Fred will be held 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, at the Phillip Funeral Home Chapel in West Bend with the Rev. Gerald Brittain presiding.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 11, from 5 p.m. until time of service. Interment will be at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Union Grove.
